"Required reading for the modern age, Automating Inequality explains through beautifully rendered individual stories and deeply researched historical analysis why we must remain vigilant and skeptical of the promises of artificial intelligence fed to us by those who stand to gain from their adoption." ―Cathy O'Neil, New York Times bestselling author of Weapons of Math Destruction"[Automating Inequality's] argument is that the use of automated decision-making in social service programs creates a "digital poorhouse" that perpetuates the kinds of negative moral judgments that have always been attached to poverty in America...Eubanks proposes a Hippocratic oath for data scientists, whereby they would vow to respect all people and to not compound patterns of discrimination." ―The New York Review of Books"Riveting (an accomplishment for a book on technology and policy). Its argument should be widely circulated, to poor people, social service workers and policymakers, but also throughout the professional classes. Everyone needs to understand that technology is no substitute for justice.” ―The New York Times Book Review"A brilliant book about how we penalize poverty. It would make a great pairing with Evicted." ―Barbara Fister, Inside Higher Ed"An important book." ―Pacific Standard"Investigates three experiments in which algorithms are replacing or augmenting human decision-making in public assistance." ―Jacobin Magazine“Eubanks ably demonstrates why everyone should be very, very worried about the present and future of poverty management. Along with the personalized stories, her data exposes the political will, the ease of establishment and the ripe soil for letting cold math take our deepest biases and, in effect, render them into invisible cages for the most vulnerable.” ―NY Daily News"Eubanks's ability to combine beautiful biographic storytelling with keen observation and criticism makes this an indispensable addition to the literature on what Cathy O'Neil calls Weapons of Math Destruction" ―Cory Doctorow, Boing Boing"To call the stories and data Eubanks has collected infuriating feels like an understatement...marginalized people are often the first to face experiments in assessment and punishment through technological tools. ..What’s incisive about Automating Inequality is how it underscores the subtle ways technology is used to this end." ―New Republic"Powerful..." ―The Progressive"Eubanks takes a hard look at some of the seemingly agnostic―and even well-meaning technologies―that promise to make the U.S. welfare apparatus well-oiled and efficient." ―CityLab"Compelling." ―Kronket Media“Computing has long been perceived to be a culture-free zone―this needs to change. But change will only occur when policymakers and voters understand the true scale of the problem. This is hard when we live in an era that likes to celebrate digitisation―and where the elites are usually shielded from the consequences of those algorithms.” ―The Financial Times"[A] must read...On par with Barbara Ehrenreich’s Nickel and Dimed or Matthew Desmond’s Evicted. It’s rigorously researched, phenomenally accessible, and utterly humbling. While there are a lot of important books that touch on the costs and consequences of technology through case studies and well-reasoned logic, this book is the first one that I’ve read that really pulls you into the world of algorithmic decision-making and inequality, like a good ethnography should." ―danah boyd, author of It's Complicated"Eubanks says we manage the poor so we don’t have to eradicate poverty....Eubanks explores three very different and widely separated approaches to managing, manipulating and controlling the poor in Indiana, the homeless in Los Angeles, and the child welfare in Pittsburgh." ―San Francisco Review of Books"Eubanks argues that automated systems separate people from resources, classify and criminalize people, and invade privacy―and that these problems will affect everyone eventually, not just the poor. The book's final chapter offers strategies to dismantle the digital poorhouse." ―Booklist (starred review)"Eubanks's advocacy for the Americans impacted by this trend is passionate and matched by incisive analysis and bolstered by impressive research." ―Library Journal"This is the single most important book about technology you will read this year. Today everyone is worrying about the Internet’s impact on democracy, but Eubanks shows that the problems facing us run much deeper than “fake news”―automated systems entrench social and economic inequality by design and undermine private and public welfare. Eubanks dives into history and reports from the trenches, helping us better understand the political and digital forces we are up against so we can effectively fight back." ―Astra Taylor, author of The People's Platform: Taking Back Power and Culture in the Digital Age"Income inequality relies on the lie of the neutrality of efficiency over the value of our common humanity. Automating Inequality exposes the deadly consequences of this plan and suggests another path. That Virginia Eubanks is our guide―a person so capable, ethical and whipsmart―is a rare combination indeed." ―Adrian Nicole LeBlanc, author of Random Family"This book is downright scary―but with its striking research and moving, indelible portraits of life in the 'digital poorhouse,' you will emerge smarter and more empowered to demand justice." ―Naomi Klein, author of No Is Not Enough and This Changes Everything“This book is for all of us: community leaders, scholars, lawyers, recipients of government assistance, and anyone alive whose survival depends upon a better understanding of how nations made wealthy by digital industries are using technology to create and maintain a permanent underclass. It is a book for our times." ―Malkia A. Cyril, Executive Director and Co-founder, Center for Media Justice"Automating Inequality is one of the most important recent books for understanding the social implications of information technology for marginalized populations in the US . As we begin discussing the potential for AI to harm people, Eubanks's work should be required reading." ―Ethan Zuckerman, Director, Center for Civic Media, MIT"Startling and brilliant... As Eubanks makes crystal clear, automation coupled with the new technologies of ethical abandonment and instrumental efficiency threaten not only the lives of millions who are viewed as disposable but also democracy itself. If you want to understand how this digital nightmare is reaching deep into the institutions that attempt to regulate our lives, and how you can challenge it, this is a must read." ―Henry Giroux, McMaster University Professor for Scholarship in the Public Interest and the Paulo Freire Distinguished Scholar in Critical Pedagogy"Equal parts advocacy and analysis―a welcome addition to the growing literature around the politics of welfare." ―Kirkus Reviews"The most data is collected on the most marginalized groups...Eubanks' ethnography makes visible the politics behind our tools." ―Internetactu.net"In this remarkable chronicle of 'how the other half lives' in the age of automation, Eubanks uncovers a new digital divide―a totalizing web of surveillance ensnaring our most marginalized communities. This powerful, sobering, and humane book exposes the dystopia of data-driven policy and urges us to create a more just society for all." ―Alondra Nelson, author of The Social Life of DNA “In this illuminating book, Eubanks shows us that in spite of cosmetic reforms, our policies for the disadvantaged remain dominated by the ancient credo of the poor law, obsessed with the exclusion and punishment of the neediest in our communities.” ―Frances Fox Piven, author of Regulating the Poor"U.S. institutions from law enforcement to health care to social services increasing punish people- especially people of color - for being poor. Automating Inequality powerfully exposes how secret, high-tech monitoring systems facilitate this injustice. A must-read for everyone concerned about modern tools of inequality in America." ―Dorothy Roberts, author of Killing the Black Body and Shattered Bond"Automating Inequality is a riveting, emotionally compelling story of vulnerable lives turned upside down by bad data, shoddy software, and bureaucrats too inept or corrupt to make things right. Systems billed as a way to protect the vulnerable in fact, all too often, do just the opposite, trapping them in a modern-day star chamber. Eubanks both gives voice to the marginalized, and offers a bold vision for dismantling the "digital poorhouse." We could all fall victim to the systems Eubanks condemns--and everyone should read this book to learn how modern governance, all too often shrouded behind impenetrable legal and computer code, actually works." ―Frank Pasquale, author of The Black Box Society: The Secret Algorithms that Control Money and Information"Virginia Eubanks' new book shocks us with her gripping stories of the emerging surveillance state for managing poverty in the U.S. today. From single mothers on welfare, to homeless individuals on the streets, to parents suspected of child neglect, the 'digital poorhouse,' as Eubanks calls it, increasingly extends its web of surveillance from classifying to predicting the poor and their behavior, not so much to aid as to manage, discipline and punish them for the poverty society imposes on them. We learn once again that technology might be neutral but not the choices the powerful make to use it. Read this book and join with Eubanks in pushing back against the surveillance state and the injustice it sustains." ―Sanford Schram, Professor of Political Science, Hunter College, CUNY; Professor of Sociology, CUNY Graduate Center Virginia Eubanks is an Associate Professor of Political Science at the University at Albany, SUNY. She is the author of Digital Dead End: Fighting for Social Justice in the Information Age and co-editor, with Alethia Jones, of Ain’t Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me Around: Forty Years of Movement Building with Barbara Smith. Her writing about technology and social justice has appeared in Scientific American, The Nation, Harper’s, and Wired. For two decades, Eubanks has worked in community technology and economic justice movements. She lives in Troy, NY.

The New York Times Book Review: "Riveting."

Naomi Klein: "This book is downright scary."

Ethan Zuckerman, MIT: "Should be required reading."

Cory Doctorow: "Indispensable."

A powerful investigative look at data-based discrimination―and how technology affects civil and human rights and economic equity

The State of Indiana denies one million applications for healthcare, foodstamps and cash benefits in three years―because a new computer system interprets any mistake as “failure to cooperate.” In Los Angeles, an algorithm calculates the comparative vulnerability of tens of thousands of homeless people in order to prioritize them for an inadequate pool of housing resources. In Pittsburgh, a child welfare agency uses a statistical model to try to predict which children might be future victims of abuse or neglect.

Since the dawn of the digital age, decision-making in finance, employment, politics, health and human services has undergone revolutionary change. Today, automated systems―rather than humans―control which neighborhoods get policed, which families attain needed resources, and who is investigated for fraud. While we all live under this new regime of data, the most invasive and punitive systems are aimed at the poor.

In Automating Inequality, Virginia Eubanks systematically investigates the impacts of data mining, policy algorithms, and predictive risk models on poor and working-class people in America. The book is full of heart-wrenching and eye-opening stories, from a woman in Indiana whose benefits are literally cut off as she lays dying to a family in Pennsylvania in daily fear of losing their daughter because they fit a certain statistical profile.

The U.S. has always used its most cutting-edge science and technology to contain, investigate, discipline and punish the destitute. Like the county poorhouse and scientific charity before them, digital tracking and automated decision-making hide poverty from the middle-class public and give the nation the ethical distance it needs to make inhumane choices: which families get food and which starve, who has housing and who remains homeless, and which families are broken up by the state. In the process, they weaken democracy and betray our most cherished national values.

This deeply researched and passionate book could not be more timely.

... technological "progress" may make the most vulnerable people even worse off. An enraging but utterly necessary account of how technological "progress" may make the most vulnerable people even worse off.The Chinese Sesame Credit system is already here for America's poor Technologists worry about Chinese plans for a social scoring system that controls access to education, jobs, housing, and credit. Virginia Eubanks makes clear that we are already building a similar system here in America, and testing it on the poor. This is what the system does not want you to know.... The information is compelling and the storytelling makes this book worthwhile. If you don't about the new poor and new rich, this shifts through some of the haze. Great read!

Cheap/low quality prints unfortunately Well you get what you pay for. The paper is ultra thin which I suppose is fine, but the printing was done in very low quality similar to old dot matrix printers. You can see the jagged lines in my photos. I didn’t give it a 1-Star because the art is actually very nice. I just wish they were done in higher quality.Lovely book but will be returning due to printing issue I really like the pictures in this book and was looking forward to adding it to my collection. Unfortunately, upon receipt, I discovered that over half of the pages have a large blank line going through them, as if there was a problem during printing. This is just one of the downfalls of online shopping... not being able to physically examine an item before purchasing. I will be returning this item for refund/ exchange.Thin Pages Pages are thin! First adult coloring book purchase - want to encourage my kid to color& get creative. Leading by example is best long term resonation. I did research before deciding & liked her other coloring book images& liked the cover so went w this one despite li,tied reviews by it was so new. Choose this over other options - sorry I did. i also did a little research to learn what coloring methods people most use. For such a coloring book - where lots use gel pens or thin markers I was expecting much more quality thick paper. Paper is thinner then standard printer paper. Thin! Prolly just give to my kid to have some fun with(destroy;). The photos of the elephant page are Zapotec taken from the negative/underside of the paper so NOT the actual front of the picture but through the back. You can. cleary see how thin the pages are! You can see the prints through/lying underneath just as they lay in the book (see monkey pic-can see the image on the next page through it).

The Golden Compass Pdf

ISBN: B0000W6SPE
Title: The Golden Compass Pdf His Dark Materials, Book 1

***Coming soon! A new HBO series, His Dark Materials, based on Pullman's Books***

The modern fantasy classic that Entertainment Weekly named an "All-Time Greatest Novel" and Newsweek hailed as a "Top 100 Book of All Time".

Philip Pullman takes listeners to a world where humans have animal familiars and where parallel universes are within reach.

Lyra is rushing to the cold, far North, where witch clans and armored bears rule. North, where the Gobblers take the children they steal - including her friend Roger. North, where her fearsome uncle Asriel is trying to build a bridge to a parallel world.

Can one small girl make a difference in such great and terrible endeavors? This is Lyra: a savage, a schemer, a liar, and as fierce and true a champion as Roger or Asriel could want.

But what Lyra doesn't know is that to help one of them will be to betray the other....

A masterwork of storytelling and suspense, Philip Pullman's award-winning The Golden Compass is the first in the His Dark Materials series, which continues with The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass.

"Arguably the best juvenile fantasy novel of the past 20 years." (The Washington Post)

"Very grand indeed." (The New York Times)

"Pullman is quite possibly a genius." (Newsweek)

5 Reasons To Read His Dark Materials One of the most famous and beloved fantasy book trilogies you can think of. One that has been tried to adapt into a movie, but it failed, as some things (okay, most things!) are probably best left in book form. It’s so epic, I can only compare it to Harry Potter. If you haven’t read it yet, let me see if I can remedy that!★★★★★ Endless number of starsHis Dark Materials is a sweeping epic that tells of a story bigger than you can imagine, but it’s also a story told through the smallest characters – a story of a world, the fate of which lies in the hands of children. In a way, it’s all about the fight between good and evil, wisdom and darkness, but not in your usual fantasy sense. This is more philosophical than you might have expected it to be, but it’s also so imaginative, so full of adventure and unbelievable details, that you’ll never get bogged down with any of the philosophy. It’s a series that you can eat through a week – no matter how long the books actually are. You won’t sleep, if you have to.Reason #1.Don’t You Just Wish Your Cat Was Your Daemon??Daemons are talking animals that are… curiously, they’re part of you. They’re kind of your spirit animal, which also makes up part of your soul. It’s incredibly interesting, cute, and it goes so well with the story! You can talk to it, it will help you and defend you, and even if you’re utterly and completely alone, it will be your companion. It’s likely that by the end of the series, you will find yourself trying to figure out what your daemon would look like. Or maybe even does look like. (more on why I say that – in the actual book!)Reason #2.There Are Wonders And MysteriesObviously, it wouldn’t be cool if I just gave it away to you, now would it. But let me just tell you that there are worlds to explore. That there are reasons the entire world is falling, and you need to find them out. And the reasons are all pretty grand as well. It’s not your typical overused YA tropes either, for example – oh, this or that super power has just decided to thwart the main character and their family, and you need a special snowflake to fix it. No, it’s far better than that! That said, the main character (who is a little girl) IS special, and she’s IS key to the saving of the world, but she’s no special snowflake. We’re getting to that in the next point.Reason #3.The Characters Have Flaws, They’re Not PerfectHaving imperfect characters is great! Especially so, because it prevents the aforementioned ‘special snowflake’ syndrome. The main female character, Lyra, is as flawed as can be – she lies, she’s not loyal, she’s subject to other people’s manipulation. She is also ridiculously dramatic, and it’s maintained throughout the entire series in the way she talks (I specifically loved that!). The main male character Will is also a great character. He’s strong willed and he’s trustable, but he can also be ruthless, hard and cold. Both of them symbolize many things, but typical special snowflakes they are not. As for symbolizing? We get to point 4…Reason #4.The SymbolismThis story has layers upon layers of symbolism, mostly to do with mythologies, or namely – Christian mythologies, exposing them quite ruthlessly at times. This is magical and super interesting, merging religious symbolism with scientific fantasy (is that.. a thing, scientific fantasy..?), and weaving together a magical build of the world, of the universe. I will not tell you what the main characters (and many others) symbolize, because that would take away from your pleasure of discovering it yourself. However, if you are religious (not only Christian, basically, any religion that is based on a single deity) – be warned, as this book might seem controversial to you. It’s not kind to organized religion. You need an open mind to read it. If you are religious, and still really want to read it (which you should!), I suggest remembering that this is just fiction and it’s an invented world.Reason #5.The FeelsThis series ends with a bad case of the feels. As bad as it gets. But it’s also the kind of feels you want in a book! Basically, the kind of feels we all read books for. But please, prepare napkins.A Worthy Read For Younger AND Older Readers This book seems to be written for a younger audience, and I have no doubt that preteens and up could read it without difficulty, but at the same time I feel that a lot of the themes and the nuance could go over the heads of younger readers. The use of accents, speech patterns, dress, and behavior to denote class, the writing of younger characters to think and behave as young people would and do while still keeping things moving forward at a good pace and keeping things both exciting and logical, the politics and relationships between adult characters: these things may be appreciated much more by adult readers than their younger counterparts. This is definitely a book which can be enjoyed by a wide range of ages. Twists and turns are difficult puzzles, but there are enough clues that a younger detective could still see what's coming if they're paying attention. The plot is thrilling, often intense, moving, and fascinating. The cultural standards surrounding daemons alone could make up their own encyclopedia. Some have claimed this book to be religious in nature, but while it does *deal* with religion quite a bit, I do not find it to be in any way advocating for any particular faith. If anything it warns against the nature of organized religion to become corrupt (without demonizing the religion itself). If you are concerned about the nature of the 'daemon' characters, be aware that the term is used in the old Greek sense more so than the 'different spelling for demon' sense; 'a supernatural being of a nature between gods and humans'. They are loosely intended to be an external version of the soul or spirit, not anything evil or bad. Be warned, though: this book does include terrible things happening to children, and several deaths. Younger children may find it frightening or upsetting. If you give this to your child be prepared to sit down with them and discuss the book when they are finished reading.

The Best Friend Free Pdf

Title: The Best Friend Pdf An utterly gripping psychological thriller with a breathtaking twist
‘I can tell we’re going to be the best of friends…’

When Louisa Sullivan takes her little boy to his first playdate at a new friend’s house she doesn’t realise life is about to change for her family. Because she’s about to meet Darcy Lane.

Darcy is a woman who has everything – a dream house, a powerful husband and enviable wealth.

She’s the perfect wife.

The perfect friend.

The perfect liar.

From the top ten bestselling author of The Secret Mother and The Child Next Door, this utterly gripping psychological thriller will have you up all night reading. If you loved Gone Girl, The Girl on the Train and The Wife Between Us this book is for you.

‘OMG what a read. Absolutely fantastic readhad me on the edge of my seat. Can't wait to read more from this author. Highly recommended. 5 stars.’ Goodreads Reviewer, 5 stars

Worth Your Time! I really enjoyed this book...it's reminiscent of Girl on the Train. It definitely held my interest and was an easy, fast read. My only criticism is of the main character/narrator, in that some of her actions didn't seem very realistic. An example (without giving away too much of the plot), she spends pages talking about wanting to get the antagonist out of her life, only to stupidly and unnecessarily go to her husband's apartment. And I think it's safe to say, most women would have unfriended Darcy MUCH sooner than Louisa does. Some of the plot is predictable, and there aren't a whole lot of shocking twists or turns. That being said, much of its appeal is in its simplicity. Great ending! It's sort of like a really good Lifetime movie!A very chilling psychological thriller for sure! Wow, this book had me right away and I read it in two sittings. The character development was excellent and I really felt such empathy for Louisa. The author really has a way with words and she is now on my must-read list.I'd like to say more but I don't want to give anything away even inadvertently. I will say this however, I loved the ending. I think it was perfect. Very highly recommended! One of those books.... It's one of those books you can't stop reading..... you're anxious to see how it's all going to turn out....but, you don't want it to end either! I hate it when I start reading a book...get through a few chapters....have to stop....and then when I pick it up to read again.... I have to go back a few pages because I can't remember what happened, or who the characters are. NOT SO with The Best Friend..... it grabbed me from the start and I couldn't wait to get back to it and pick up right where I left off. I really like the author's style of writing.....think I finished this book in 2 days. It was the first time I read anything by Shalini Boland...so, I had to check out what else she has written. Within the next few weeks I read The Secret Mother and The Girl from the Sea.....loved them both also. Just ordered Perfect Family....so, I'm kind of hooked on this auther!

Perfect read to help me revamp my career This book gave me the courage and direction to make my best career move to date. Insightful, empowering, real life advice for today’s work force. A must read for any stage of career growth!Great read for working parents What I love about this book is how it so clearly paints a picture of what's important in life. Work can become all consuming and before you know it you have traded what's important in life for perceived success in the work place. As a father who works hard for his family I appreciated the lessons in this book. "If you trade time for money yoy will never be wealthy". Such a great line and so true. Great book, excited to read more from Nick.Great advice from an authority in personal evolution I've known Nick for a while now, and he always brings more value than expected. His tenacity and consistency are what led to his personal success. I'm glad to have this book.
