The Art of War is an ancient Chinese military treatise attributed to Sun Tzu a high-ranking military general, strategist and tactician, and it was believed to have been compiled during the late Spring and Autumn period or early Warring States period. The text is composed of 13 chapters, each of which is devoted to one aspect of warfare. It is commonly known to be the definitive work on military strategy and tactics of its time. It has been the most famous and influential of China’s Seven Military Classics, and for the last two thousand years it remained the most important military treatise in Asia, where even the common people knew it by name. It has had an influence on Eastern and Western military thinking, business tactics, legal strategy and beyond.

It is a book meant for good. I want to tell future readers of this book in this way. I read it first when I was 14 or 15. I thought it was a book on how to smartly fight a war. Then I re-read it when I was 28 and it occurred to me that it may be an instruction book on how to navigate an honorable life. Years passed and I recently found it at the bottom of a box in my closet. I read it again at age 56. I realized it has more to offer. If you read this book, you will actively have to replace Sun Tzus' ancient terms and placement of hierarchy and apply them to modern situations and people. Family, bosses, neighbors, employees and the list goes on. It is my belief that this "manual" can help solve minor and major disruptions in life if used correctly. It is a book meant for good.A classic on the art of war The Baron Antoine Henri de Jomini's "The Art of War" is an early classic on military strategy and tactics. With von Clausewitz, he was one of the more widely read scholars on the subject in the 19th century. His book tends to have an abstract, scholarly air to it that suggests that he was more of an "arm chair" theorist than a man whom he learned much from--Napoleon Bonaparte. Napoleon may have had general perspectives on warfare, but he was also someone who was able to be improvisational on the battlefield, and Jomini cannot quite capture that in this work. Nonetheless, a classic.Charles Messenger's Introduction does single out Jomini for mention, when he notes (Page v): "Nineteenth -century military thought was dominated by two men, one a German and the other a Swiss. . . . They were von Clausewitz and Jomini." Jomini argued that (Page vii): "Strategy decodes where to act; logistics brings the troops to this point; grand tactics determines the manner of execution and the employment of the troops."As Jomini's actual work begins, he identifies the six key components of the art of war (Page 2):"1. Statesmanship in its relation to war.2. Strategy, or the art of properly directing masses upon the theater of war, either for defense or for invasion.3. Grant tactics.4. Logistics, or the art of moving armies.5. Engineering--the attack and defense of fortifications.6. Minor tactics."The book itself, then, considers these elements of the art of war. No need to go into great detail. But some general points are in order. At one point, he emphasizes the importance of "lines"--interior lines, where one side has a more compact line and can move troops from one point to another with greater facility than the enemy; exterior lines, which are longer. If a smaller force, interior lines are critical; if a larger force, exterior lines may prove no impediment to success.One facet of this book is his diagrams depicting various orders of attack (pages 188 and following). This tends, as noted earlier, to be pretty abstract. One hesitates to think that officers in the heat of combat will intellectually assess the various orders of attack and rationally choose one over another. Among these are straight linear orders (where the two forces approach one another in straight lines) to "en echelon" attacks, where the lines are arrayed in depth.He notes in his conclusion that (Page 321) "War in its ensemble in not a science, but an art."So, if one might be interested in an analysis of military strategy and tactics from the early part of the 19th century, this is not a bad starting point. It is a classic on the subject, and, even if too abstract and academic, can be a useful book to understand the military in that era.Beware! Not full length book Just received the book. excellent novel I am a huge fan of Ann Patchett, both her novels and her less appreciated non-fiction. For me, her last novel - Commonwealth - was disappointing. The Dutch House is a return to her usual form, a compelling and sensitive book. Highly recommended.Ann Patchett's marvelous new novel This is my favorite of her novels. I have read them all. Up till now my favs were The Magician's Assistant and Patron Saint of Liars but now they come in second and third to Dutch House. Her characters are unforgettable---- dialogue so realistic, descriptions of the house are visual down to the last detail. This is the best brother/sister novel I have ever read. I hope she wins all the book awards on this year. She is just the best contemporary author today. If I could give 10 stars I would.A good, solid 3 I read the book in a couple of sittings. At times it was mesmerizing, at times achingly slow. I just could not shake the feeling that the protagonist/narrator should have been a female. Even his name, ‘Danny,’ is genderless. I understand the plot and structure reasons why he is male, but I find myself disappointed in the traditional role he was assigned, while female characters were not so shackled by convention.

What "Hillbilly Elegy" should have been I read "Hillbilly Elegy" a few months ago after seeing such great reviews and because I grew up down the road from the author. However, I found that book to be more braggadocio and less of a tale of abuse or extreme poverty. I humbly submit that anyone who enjoyed that book to take time and read "Breaking Night". I rarely if ever cry during a book but did so a few times while reading Murray's memoir. This young woman survived terrible poverty, neglect, and teenage homelessness only to make it through Harvard. She never whines or blames anyone including her drug addicted parents who kept her out of school to " break the night" with them. This is a wonderful story of someone tirelessly beating every possible odd and coming out on top. One of the best memoirs I have ever had the privilege of reading.An Absolute Must-Read: A Story of Hope Amidst Horror Much like "The Glass House" (Jeannette Walls) and "Coming Clean" (Kimberly Rae Miller), "Breaking Night: A Memoir of Forgiveness, Survival, and My Journey from Homeless to Harvard" is a horrific, but incredibly inspiring, true story of how one little girl is emotionally and then physically abandoned by her parents and yet somehow grows up functional--so functional she goes to Harvard. Liz Murray spent more time cutting school than attending classes, doing all she could to get her drug-addicted mother to pay attention to her, surviving without a working shower/bathtub and stealing clothes and food because the family's money was spent on drugs and booze. And somehow social services never intervened until she was 13--even though many of those in authority knew what was going on in the house. I am so impressed with Liz Murray's fortitude and gumption. It would have been so easy to repeat her mother's story; instead, she created her own and it is a truly astounding one. Homeless from the age of 15, she managed to go back to school, graduate, win a New York Times scholarship and go to Harvard. Reading this book will make you both cry and laugh and feel both ashamed and encouraged--but most of all, it will give you hope. We humans are tough cookies!Zero judgements. Reality is often painful to read. Thank you for sharing this. Congratulations, and God bless you Liz Murray for surviving. Beyond surviving. For contributing to our society, which is suffering from many social ills due to drug and alcohol abuse, coupled with psychiatric issues.What saddened me more than reading this Memoir, were the negative comments. I do believe, without a shadow of a doubt, Ms Murray had, and still has, strong emotions regarding her life. She chose to try to write an inspirational book. Depressing? Yes, if you can't handle the reality of many children. I think reading the back cover would give a clue on the contents. When surrounded in such dysfunction, one would be emotionally delayed. Emotions can crop up many years after the actual situation. Her life was more of a daily battle zone. Survival mode does not give one much time to analyze feelings. Her forgiveness of her parent's are amazing, though those thoughts may change as she ages, and perspective sets in. Eating chapstick is hardly conducive to proper nutrition, or stimulating the brain cells. Neither is being born crack addicted. I suppose the 80's were different, though I cannot fathom why Social Services did not remove her from the hospital. I commend those who actually did help and guide her.It appears many simply ignored the situation. No family members involved? The breakdown of our society. I would like to see her write a second book. An update, if you will. More on Lisa. More on her emotions, even if it offends those who were depressed by the contents. No judgements from me. None. God has truly walked with these two sisters. May they continue on a path of peace. Thank you for writing this Liz.

Entertaining Box writes entertaining who-dun-nits, with nice descriptions of the scenic beauty of the rural rocky mountain west. Good for chilling out on an evening or lazy weekend. Many of his characters are tropes of the western US. The thing I don't like about Box's books is that he seems to be an apologist (or shill) for the west's Dick Cheneys and other "rugged anti-big government individualists" (ranchers, miners, oilmen, land developers, outfitters)--all of whom have been sucking at the government's tits since the 19th century. These people, and Box (whose main characters are inevitably government employees - cops, rangers), are among America's biggest hypocrites.Not Your Typical Box Novel Cody Hoyt is a lapsed alcoholic, divorced, and a police detective who just doesn't seem to care about much any more. At least until his son goes on a wilderness trip with his soon-to-be step-father. During a murder investigation, Hoyt discovers links to other murders, and somehow figures out that the murderer may be on the same wilderness trip as his son. Despite having zero experience in the wild, he convinces a retired tour guide to help him find his son and maybe catch a killer.I love Box's Joe Picket series and picked this up expecting something different yet similar. It isn't. Cody Hoyt is just not a likeable character (which is generally OK), and it's difficult to invest yourself in him. The situations seem contrived or convenient throughout the book. I did finish the book, but the last half was a struggle, and I finished it only because I thought Box would somehow bring the story together better than he did.Not recommended, but I'm looking forward to the next Pickett novel.5+ Stars Compelling 5+ Stars Compelling. CJ Box is a must read, must buy author. His new series with character Cody Hoyt is a page-turner. Easy to follow stand-alone with no graphic violence or drag-you-down drama.Interesting storyline with realistic setting, actions and reactions.Believable characters with distinct personalities. They said you were a loose cannon and you were all over the place like a fart on a hot skillet. But they also said you were a f'ing fantastic cop and you went at every case like a bulldog on steroids who wouldn’t let go''The long flashlights had been banned from most police departments, which Cody saw as a further sign of official wimpification.''Because if there was a body and it belonged to whom he thought and if the evidence pointed to a homicide, he’d personally go after who did it like a rabid dog until he took that person down. And he wasn’t thinking Deer Lodge, Montana, where the state penitentiary was located. He was thinking Dirt Nap, Montana. Which was just about anywhere he wanted it to be.'I will re-read this story and look forward to more in this series.
